January 10th — Anniversary of the 1924 birth of multi-percussionist, composer and bandleader Max Roach. His percussion ensemble M’Boom had an influence on my musical career, one which I cannot overstate. Liner notes excerpt above is from the first M’Boom album (that one and “Live at S.O.B.’s” are my favorites). Picture is from Max’s “Drums Unlimited” album. January 10th is an especially good day to listen to Max Roach and his bandmates including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and so many more.
